Frequently asked questions

Straight answers about cost, materials, timelines, and how we work. If your question is not here, call and talk it through with the craftsman.

Most homeowners want to know three things: what it costs, which stone is right for them, and how long it takes. We have answered those below, plus the questions we hear most about templating, seams, and the areas we serve. Every answer is the same one you would get on the phone.

Do not see your question? Call us at (571) 340-7216 and you will reach the person who does the work, not a call center. We are happy to walk through your project and give you a free in-home estimate.

Pricing & cost

How much do quartz countertops cost in Northern Virginia?
A typical Northern Virginia kitchen (about 45 square feet) in quartz runs roughly $4,200–$5,300 installed, including demo and basic prep. Per square foot, quartz generally runs $50–$140+ installed depending on the brand, edge profile, and seam complexity. Your free estimate gives an exact number.
How much do granite countertops cost?
Granite typically runs $40–$100+ per square foot installed in our area, which makes entry-level colors one of the best values in natural stone. A typical kitchen lands around $3,050–$4,175 installed. Exotic colors cost more.
What is included in your countertop price?
Our estimates include fabrication, standard installation, seaming, and leveling. Items that vary by kitchen are listed clearly: edge upgrades, sink and cooktop cutouts, removal and disposal of old tops, and any plumbing reconnection. We publish typical ranges so there are no surprises, and your in-home estimate is the exact number.
Why is your quote different from prices I see advertised online?
Advertised online prices usually show only material, or a low promotional tier, and leave out cutouts, edges, removal, and install. Our quote is the real, all-in number for your actual kitchen. Northern Virginia labor also runs a bit above national averages, which mostly shows up in the install, where careful work matters most.

Materials

What's the difference between quartz and quartzite?
Quartz is engineered stone (natural quartz plus resin), nonporous, consistent, and never needs sealing. Quartzite is 100% natural stone that looks like marble but is much harder and more durable. Quartz is great for low-maintenance kitchens; quartzite is a premium pick for the marble look with real durability.
Quartz vs granite, which should I choose?
Choose quartz if you want a consistent look and zero maintenance (no sealing). Choose granite if you want a one-of-a-kind natural stone, the best heat resistance, and strong value. Both are excellent; we'll bring samples and help you decide based on how you cook and live.
Can you use quartz for a fireplace surround?
We don't recommend engineered quartz directly around a working firebox, its resin binder can discolor or be damaged by sustained heat. For fireplace surrounds we use heat-appropriate natural stone like granite, marble, or quartzite. It's the safe, lasting choice.
Which quartz brands do you install?
We install leading quartz lines, including MSI's Q Premium Natural Quartz, Cambria, Caesarstone, and Silestone. We source most of our material from MSI Surfaces, North America's largest stone distributor, which gives you a very wide range of colors and patterns to choose from.
What is the most durable countertop material?
For everyday durability, quartz and quartzite lead. Quartz is nonporous and resists stains and scratches without sealing. Quartzite and granite are natural stones that handle heat exceptionally well, so a hot pan isn't a problem, though they need periodic sealing. Marble is the softest of the four and is best for lower-traffic or statement areas.
Can you help match a countertop to my cabinets and floor?
Yes. Colors look different in your own kitchen than under showroom lights, so we bring real samples to your home and help you choose against your actual cabinets, floor, and lighting. For exotic stone, we also help you select the specific slab that goes into your kitchen.

Measuring, fabrication & installation

How long does countertop installation take?
From templating to final install is usually about 1–2 weeks. We template your space, fabrication takes several days, and installation itself is typically a single day. We give you a clear timeline up front and keep you posted.
Do you do the measuring and templating yourselves?
Yes, and it's the most important step. We template on-site and verify every dimension before any stone is cut. Precise measurement is the difference between a counter that fits perfectly and one with gaps or a wasted slab. It's the reason customers choose us.
Will the seams show?
Most kitchens need at least one seam because slabs have size limits. We minimize visibility by planning seam placement, matching the stone's grain and color, and using quality seaming methods. A well-placed seam is hard to spot.
How does the templating process work?
After you choose your slab, we visit your home and create a precise template of your counters, capturing every dimension, corner, overhang, and the exact sink and cooktop openings. That template is the blueprint your stone is cut to. It's the single most important step, because once stone is cut wrong it can't be uncut, so we measure to your real space, including walls that aren't square.
How long does the whole project take, from estimate to installed?
For a typical kitchen, plan on about one to two weeks from approved estimate to installed counters. After we template, fabrication usually takes several days, then installation is typically a single day. Exotic slabs, large islands, or complex layouts can add time. We give you a clear timeline with your estimate.

Service & areas

Do you remove my old countertops?
Yes, we can remove and dispose of your existing countertops as part of the project. Removal typically runs $200–$500 depending on the material and size; we include it in your estimate so there are no surprises.
What areas do you serve?
We serve Northern Virginia (Fairfax, Arlington, Alexandria, McLean, and Loudoun County), Washington DC, and the Bethesda and Baltimore areas of Maryland. If you're nearby, just ask.
Do you work with interior designers and general contractors?
Yes. We're happy to work directly with you, or alongside your interior designer or general contractor. Either way, one accountable craftsman handles your stone from measurement through installation, so nothing gets lost in a handoff.
How soon can you come out for a free estimate?

General questions

Is the in-home estimate really free?
Yes. We come to your home, look at your space, talk through materials and budget, and give you an estimate at no charge and no obligation. The fastest way to start is to call us.
Do you offer a warranty?
Material warranties depend on the product and manufacturer. Many quartz lines carry a limited lifetime residential warranty when registered. We'll confirm the specific warranty for your material and our installation when we give your estimate.
Do you do bathroom vanities and fireplace surrounds, or only kitchens?
We do all three. Along with kitchen countertops, we fabricate and install bathroom vanity tops and fireplace surrounds. For fireplaces we use heat-appropriate natural stone like granite, marble, or quartzite rather than engineered quartz.
